Do you find the clutter creeping back into your home despite multiple sort-outs?
I’m sorry to break it to you; even the most minimal homes can become cluttered easily. Decluttering is a habit and takes practice. However, as with all habits, it becomes easier over time.
Here are some simple steps to ensure your home remains tidy and clutter-free...
Habits to Keep Your Home Clutter-Free
Throw the packaging away as soon as you have opened something.
The packaging that items come in, such as Amazon boxes, can seem handy but mostly sit unused. Flatten the box and throw the packaging away as soon as you open your parcels. Not only will your home feel less cluttered, but it will be easier come bin day knowing it's already done.
Read letters and sort them as soon as they arrive.
It’s so easy to let things pile up to be looked at one day. But the longer you wait for one day, the bigger the task. Open letters instantly, place them correctly or throw them away if they are not important documents (shred/recycle).
Display your most used items.
This seems counterproductive, but tidily displaying things you use daily makes it much easier to put them back in the right place each day. This might be well-used appliances, such as keeping the blender on the worktop or storage jars for things like washing powder, that can become useful decor. There is, of course, a balance to strike here, but I can help with that!
A place for everything.
How often have you had things taking up space not knowing where to put them? It's much easier when everything has a home. Place items without a home into a box and find space for them. Do they belong in the kitchen, in a cupboard? Then a simple, 5-minute tidy-up before bed can make all the difference to how the next day begins.
Do not wait for motivation, create it.
Motivating yourself to do one small task creates a domino effect on the rest. For example, making your bed in the morning will likely inspire you to move things from the bedside that shouldn’t be there, and so on. Make yourself do one thing and if that’s all you do, great! If you end up doing more, even better!

One-in, one-out.
Decluttering is an ongoing process. You will find in time that you buy less because you don’t want to keep having to declutter. But with things so easily accessible to us, it’s easy to end up with new home accessories or extra clothing that you don’t necessarily need. For the home to remain decluttered, you must remove things as often as you bring them in.
This is where you can apply the one-in, one-out rule. For example, if you find a new coat that you love, are there any that you no longer like as much that you can sell or donate?
These everyday choices will make a difference to your home and bank balance!
